Mark Lyttelton Hichens was head of History at the Junior School. He was appointed to the Junior School Staff by Peter Gibbs in 1970; he retired in 1987. Educated at Winchester and New College, he served as a matelot in the Royal Navy during the Second World War before becoming a schoolmaster. At King’s, he taught English and History, set up and ran the Library when the Junior School was refashioned, edited 'Cabbages and Kings' and produced a number of successful tennis teams.

In 1987, Mark edited a commemorative magazine to celebrate the Junior School’s 75th Anniversary. He also published a number of history books including: Great Britain and Europe 1814 – 1914, The Troubled Century – British and World History 1914-1993, West Downs, Portrait of an English Prep School, Prime Ministers’ Wives – and One Husband

Mark passed away on 26 November 2022 aged 96. Tony Hein, former colleague, remembered him: “He was an elegant gentleman of the old school, a fine tennis player and a much-published historian”.
