Michael Quinlan died in a motor accident on 29 April 2024.
Michael joined the Junior School in 1958, and was educated at King’s throughout, leaving the sixth form in 1967. While there, his main interests included long distance and cross-country running, at which he excelled. One of his A levels was economics, which developed his interest in the subject of taxation.
He trained as a chartered accountant, and then followed a very successful career as a tax consultant and adviser. In his thirties, he moved to Monaco, and also kept a house in the Alpes-Maritimes above Cannes. He returned to Surrey as he moved into retirement, though he never gave up work entirely.
He was interested in fine wines, and also particularly in cars. He was on his way to a motoring event when he suffered his fatal accident.
Michael’s first marriage ended at a sadly young age, after he had cared for his disabled wife, Gill. for some years until her death. He then married Sharon, and they were together for forty years. He had no children, but was a father figure and counsellor to several young people, often children of friends. Some of these attended his funeral, along with a generous number of others who knew him, including King’s classmates and many connections through motoring associations.
