Dr Jonathan McDowell’s journey to King’s began when he was awarded a Surrey Scholarship, enabling him to join the school and flourish in an environment that nurtured academic curiosity and intellectual ambition. Leaving King’s in 1977, he developed a passion for mathematics, physics and astronomy, inspired by a desire to better understand the universe and humanity’s place within it. His time at King’s gave him the confidence to pursue his interests at the highest level and laid the foundations for a remarkable scientific career.

After studying Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and completing a doctorate in Astrophysics, Jonathan went on to become a world-renowned astrophysicist. He spent more than three decades at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, combining cutting-edge research into high-energy astrophysics with a lifelong fascination for space exploration. Alongside his academic work, he became internationally recognised for his authoritative tracking and analysis of satellites, rocket launches and space activity, helping to make complex scientific concepts accessible to a global audience.

Reflecting on the opportunities that shaped his own life, Jonathan believes deeply in the transformative power of education. He credits King’s with fostering the intellectual independence and curiosity that have guided his career and enabled him to contribute to scientific discovery on the world stage. As a former Surrey Scholar, he understands the lasting impact that financial support can have on a young person’s future and is passionate about ensuring that talented pupils, regardless of their background, can benefit from the same opportunities. For Jonathan, widening access to an exceptional education is not only an investment in individual potential, but in the discoveries, innovations and contributions that future generations will make to society.

“At King’s I learnt that you can make a difference, you won’t achieve anything if you don’t try and that it matters, that it matters what you give back to the world.”
