KCS Alumna Charlotte Scowen (OK 2022) Makes Varsity History

KCS alumna Charlotte Scowen (OK 2022) made Varsity history by scoring for Oxford in their emphatic 52–8 win over Cambridge — the first KCS try in a rugby Varsity Match for Oxford since 1982.

Historic Varsity Try for KCS Alumna as Oxford Women Dominate at StoneX Stadium

KCS alumna Charlotte Scowen (OK 2022) made Varsity history at StoneX Stadium, scoring a try for Oxford in a landmark 52–8 victory over Cambridge — the first time a KCS alum has crossed the whitewash in a rugby Varsity Match for Oxford since 1982.

Oxford University Women delivered a statement performance at the 2025 Women’s Varsity Matches, overpowering Cambridge 52–8 at Saracens’ StoneX Stadium to lift the Varsity trophy for the second consecutive year and the 24th time in their history. Among the eight tries scored was a particularly special moment for King’s College School, as Charlotte powered over late in the game on her Varsity debut season.

Coming off the bench wearing number 17, Charlotte entered the match as loosehead prop and made an immediate impact. In the 78th minute, she scored Oxford’s eighth and final try, capping a dominant Dark Blues display and writing her name into Varsity and KCS history. Her score marked the first time a KCS alumna or alumnus has scored a try in a rugby Varsity Match for Oxford since Richard Luddington in 1982.

For Charlotte, the moment was made even more remarkable by the fact that this was her first year playing for the Blues — a testament to both her development as a player and the opportunities increasingly available within the women’s game.

The match showcased Oxford’s physicality, depth and control. Despite early pressure from Cambridge, Oxford gradually asserted dominance, leading 19–0 at half-time before accelerating further in the second half to score five more tries. The commanding performance underlined the strength of the Dark Blues programme and delivered one of the most emphatic Varsity victories in recent memory.

Beyond the headline scoreline, the occasion was historic for another reason. This was the first year that either university has won all three women’s Varsity fixtures — Blues, 2s and 3s — completing a clean sweep across the women’s programme. The achievement highlights the exceptional progress being made across all levels of Oxford women’s rugby.

Charlotte’s try added a proud alumni dimension to an already memorable day. Coming from the front row, her score embodied the power and resilience that define the modern women’s game, and her contribution was warmly celebrated by teammates and supporters alike.

Women’s rugby continues to grow rapidly, with rising participation, visibility and pathways for new players at every level. Varsity 2025 stood as a powerful showcase of that momentum — and Charlotte Scowen’s achievement serves as an inspiring example for current pupils and fellow alumnae considering the sport, whether as seasoned athletes or complete newcomers.

A historic night for Oxford, a landmark moment for KCS, and a fitting celebration of a game very much on the rise.
