Glen James, attended King's as a Surrey Scholar in 1963 and left in 1969. He was a House Prefect (Alverstone). Glen went on to read Law at New College, University of Oxford and was awarded a first. He qualified as a solicitor with Slaughter and May in 1976. He became a partner in 1983, specialising in company and commercial law. Calm, meticulous, and principled, Glen was widely respected within the profession. He remained with the firm until his retirement in 2012.
Alongside his legal career, Glen devoted himself to King's in many ways throughout his entire life. He was an active member of the King's community with a keen interest in cross-country, golf and rugby. He served the school community as a governor (also as vice chair) from 2006 for three consecutive terms, and contributing as director of King’s International, helping to grow our network of schools overseas. It felt entirely fitting that, in 2021, in recognition of his longstanding support and wise counsel, he was invited to join the King’s Fellowship, where he continued to offer his guidance.
Glen believed deeply in widening educational opportunity, having experienced first‑hand the life‑changing impact of a free place when he joined the school in 1963. This belief in education as a force for transformation shaped every aspect of his contribution and he was one of the schools founding trustees of the King's College School Bursaries Foundation when it was established in 2025. In addition to his advocacy for King's, he served as Vice Chairman of African Revival, a charity committed to ensuring that every child in Africa has equal access to schooling and since 2014, Glen had been a Trustee of The Rhodes Trust at the University of Oxford, supporting its mission to bring together exceptional people from all over the world to create positive change through education.
Above all, Glen was a devoted husband, to Mandy and father of three daughters. His kindness, integrity, and quiet determination touched all who knew him. He will be remembered with gratitude and affection across the communities he served.
